A Snippet of Dennis Frayne’s Life and Experiences in North Tustin, CA.

I grew up in North Tustin during a time when there were fewer fences, more open spaces, and lots of orange groves! We lived in a neighborhood called, “St. Hubert Woods,” at the foot of the foothills. My parents bought the house there on Dall Lane, off 17th Street, when it was very inexpensive compared to today! I went to kindergarten at Loma Vista Elementary School, and even learned to walk around the block to get there by myself! As youth we walked to Foothill High School almost daily during the hot summer months to swim in their Olympic-sized pool, and picked and ate oranges along the way. We played Little League baseball on the Hewes Middle School baseball diamonds, and later AYSO soccer. We rode our bikes to the store, and found sidewalks to ride our Big Wheels and skateboards. We played football on our large front lawn, hide and seek, and kick the can in the street, including after dark. Block parties were fun, and we set off a display of fireworks every 4th of July. We did a lot of gardening and grew our own corn, watermelons, and pumpkins. We belonged to a 4-H club, and built a farm-like corral with chickens, rabbits, ducks, doves, and even a goat in our backyard. We played a lot of piano, and I took lessons from Mrs. Farr in our neighborhood and then Ruth Stevenson Alling of the LoKnoPla Music Institute in Santa Ana. In high school I taught piano lessons, and I also became a skilled magician and performed for children’s birthday parties and libraries around Tustin and Orange County, including the Tustin Library. Some of my favorite things to play on the piano were Chopsticks, Heart and Soul, and The Knuckle Song duet with my Mom and my siblings. My parents still live in the same house where I grew up!
